Announcing You're Pregnant in Relationships
Finding out your pregnant can be exciting and scary at the same time. Telling other people can be tricky, especially if you don’t know how they’ll react. Here’s some tips from Ping young parent group who’ve been there.
“I remember being really unsure how to announce my pregnancy with my son, I haven’t posted on Facebook about my current pregnancy and I only have around 12 weeks to go.”
Who do you tell?
It’s important to tell someone you trust first about you/your partner’s pregnancy. They can provide support and even go to doctor or midwife appointments with you.
“I told my work supervisor I thought I was pregnant. She encouraged me to do a test and it was nice to have someone older and calm with me.”
Telling people close to you, like your partner or parents, might be difficult but being honest and clear about the pregnancy is probably best. Some people may not react the way you’d like but be clear with them about how you feel. If your baby was planned or you are happy to be having a baby, then let them know.
“Be honest. Do it face to face and the sooner the better.”
If you’re pregnant but not sure if you want to continue with the pregnancy, then contact your doctor or midwife as early as possible so they can explain your options and guide you to the next step. It’s your choice whether to continue the pregnancy or not. See your article on Your Pregnancy Options.
Announcing on Social Media
Baby announcements can be cute, but you may not want to tell everyone online.
My greatest dream realized! We are having a baby! I had been waiting and wondering but God had a plan all along. He knew what He was doing. I simply had to trust in Him and be patient. I still at times can't believe that our love created life! Tristan, thank you for loving me the way that you do! Thank you for treating me like a Queen! Thank you for making me feel beautiful at all stages! Tristan, most of all, Thank you for making me a MOMMY!!! You have made this experience even more magical than I could have envisioned! I will never forget how wonderful you've been to me during this time! Thank you for making me so happy my love! Thank you to everyone for the love and positive vibes! I know we've been keeping this quiet but we wanted to enjoy this between our family and close friends as long as we could privately. To enjoy our first precious moments just us ❤️ Thank you all for understanding. I am so thankful, excited, nervous, eager, overjoyed and scared all in one! But it's the best bundle of feelings I've ever felt in my life! ❤️❤️❤️
“I kept my whole second pregnancy a secret till two days after the birth, it’s important to tell young parents there is not any pressure to post about a pregnancy online”
If you do want to announce it online, make sure you’re comfortable with everyone knowing and try not to share too many sensitive details like the due date or full name.
What to Say to Someone Who is Pregnant
So, your friend has told you they or their partner is pregnant? You might want to ask them how they are feeling or if there’s anything you can do to help them. If they are happy about the baby, then most people will want to hear congratulations!
