Get Involved in Hurling and Camogie in Sport
Looking to try a new sport? Liam from the Young People's Sport Panel gives you an insight into the mysterious and ancient world of hurling.
What is hurling?
Hurling is an outdoors team sport that's a little bit like hockey. It involves teams of 15 players trying to score goals with a stick, or hurley. It's one of the most popular sports in Ireland.
The female version is called camogie and largely follows the same rules as hurling.
Where does hurling come from?
Hurling is an ancient sport. In fact, it's older than the recorded history of Ireland and has been a distinct Irish sport for at least 2000 years. The earliest written proof and references to the sport date from the fifth century.
How can I play?
As well as being one of the most popular sports in Ireland, hurling and camogie are played all over the world. There are a number of clubs in Scotland. Find your local one.
If you are under 18 then there is only one junior club in Scotland, Tir Conaill Harps GAC, based in Glasgow. Find out more.
