How to Stay Safe in the Sun in Body

Aiming to get a tan, a 'sunburn tattoo' or just being too busy in the pool or sightseeing means we sometimes forget to top up our sun tan lotion, but staying safe in the sun is super important in protecting our skin from sunburn and even more permanent damage.  Check out our top tips on how to look after your skin! 

Know what to look for in your sun tan lotion


  • You should use sunscreen that's at least SPF 30
  • Make sure you get sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Even if it’s cloudy outside, put sunscreen on. The UV rays from the sun can still sneak through the clouds and burn you - trust us, we've been there!
  • Make sure your sunscreen isn’t out of date! If in doubt buy more. 
  • Do some Google research on the brand before you buy, and make sure it's passed the protection tests. Some big name brands have been found not to be providing the level of protection which they claim to.

  • Look for the Star rating on the bottle. You want something with at least three stars! 

Wear clothes that protect you from the sun


  • If wearing sandals or going barefoot remember to put sunscreen on your feet! (nose, ears, hands and the back of your neck are some of those other sneaky areas we sometimes forget!)
  • Wear sunglasses that have 100% UVA and UVB protection to portect your eyes.

Don't be afraid to head into the shade


  • Try and avoid being out in the sun between 11am-2pm. This is the hottest time of the day, making it the most likely time to get burned. Head under an umbrella or use it as the perfect time to head indoors for some lunch, to visit a museum or do a spot of shopping.
  • Always reapply sunscreen after being in the water, even waterproof suncream, and don't stay in the water too long without topping up your sun tan lotion - especially on your shoulders and head which are still exposed when you're in the pool.
  • Whenever you feel the sun is getting to much for you, don't be embarrassed to head into the shade or indoors for a cool down.

Plus, make sure to drink plenty of water to keep you hydrated when you're out in the sun.

If you do get burned, know how to soothe your skin


  • Sponge sore skin with cool water, then apply some aftersun. If you feel unwell or the skin swells blisters, seek medical help.
  • Stay out of the sun and cover up until all signs of redness have gone.
