If you're considering running away from home, remember running away can cause more problems than it solves. If you're feeling low or feel in danger, help is available to support you. 

What if I can't stand it any longer?

Bottling up bad feelings and keeping problems to ourselves makes us feel trapped.

Talking with someone you trust, and telling people how you feel will help you decide what to do next.

If you're worried no-one will believe you or won't listen, you can call a confidential helpline, or contact the police.

Why not just run away?

Running away only solves one problem - not liking the situation you're in - but causes a whole load of other problems.

Living on the streets isn't safe even for adults. As a young person, it's way more dangerous. 1 in 7 runaways experience violence or abuse while away, often while sleeping rough.

More often than not, if we run away because we feel bad, those bad feelings soon catch up with us.

What if I'm in danger?

If you feel in immediate danger, call 999 and ask for the police.

If you need to get out quick, make sure you're running to somewhere, not to nowhere.

You could:

  • stay with a relative
  • stay with another adult you know and trust
  • stay with an older mate.

Try to take these things with you if you can:

  • money
  • any medicines you need
  • warm clothes and a change of clothes
  • your passport and birth certificate
  • your phone (and charger) if you have one.

Who can help me if I've ran away?

If you're under 18, your parents have thrown you out or you've run away because you're being abused or neglected, you local council or local social work department can help you.
