Staying Safe When Drinking on Holiday in Lifestyle
If you're drinking while on holiday, make sure to follow our top tips to stay safe.
1) Soaking up the sun? Hydrate!
When you're out in the sun, you need to drink plenty of fluids or you'll become dehydrated. And by fluids, we mean water and juice - not alcohol, which is actually dehydrating.
Keep a bottle of water with you at all times, head into the shade regularly, and make sure to drink water between alcoholic drinks - throughout the day and when you're out at night.
2) Line your stomach
Any excuse to sample some of the local cuisine, while allowing you to enjoy your night without getting an upset stomach from too much alcohol.
Go for something that has a combination of protein, carbohydrates and veggies to get a mix of all the nutrients you need.
3) Set your limit
Some holiday resorts free pour alcohol at the bars, which can result in you drinking much more than you intended, or even realise.
You can tell the bartender that you want just one measure of alcohol in your drink so you can keep an eye on how much you're actually drinking. If you're drinking in your hotel room before heading out, make sure you keep an eye on the measures you and your friends are pouring too - you don't want to miss out on the rest of the night because you drank too much before going out!
4) Day drinking
While it might be tempting to sip on a cocktail or a beer at the beach, drinking from dusk till dawn can mean you have no idea how much you’ve had to drink, and can cause serious damage to your body.
Make sure you still stick to the recommended daily limits, even if you're drinking for a longer time throughout the day.
5) Buy brand names
Trying to understand labels in foreign languages, or unfamiliar logos, can be difficult and you might not be entirely sure of what you're buying, or how reputable the brand is.
Stick to an established brand name that you know and have experience with, to save yourself from getting ill.
Cheaper options might seem tempting, but it's better to be safe!
6) Don't drink and swim
It's very dangerous to go near the pool or sea when you've been drinking. You also need to be safe when trying out any other physical activities.
While you might want to adopt a more adventurous attitude while on holiday and try out some new things (which can be a good thing!) it’s not a good idea to combine this with alcohol. Renting quadbikes or trying out parasailing can be a great experience if done safely, but it's very dangerous to do if you've had a drink or two.
7) Keep cautious
Sometimes when we're on holiday and feeling a bit more relaxed, we can find ourselves being more friendly and sociable. It's always 'nice to be nice' but it’s more important to keep yourself safe.
Avoid putting yourself in a vulnerable situation by being alone with somebody you've just met - always stick with your friends, and let people know where you are at all times.
Top tip: Check local customs and laws when it comes to alcohol before you go, such as whether you can drink outside.
