You and the UNCRC
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is a list of 54 Articles that cover all aspects of life for young people under the age of eighteen. 40 of the Articles describe the rights that the government must make sure you have. The UK signed up to the UNCRC in 1991.
The UK Government submitted its most recent report to the UNCRC committee on the Rights of the Child (a committee of experts from across the world) in July 2007. The committee will meet with representatives from government and Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs), including young people from Article 12 in Scotland who have produced an “alternative” report called I WITNESS THE UNCRC IN SCOTLAND, to discuss their reports in June and September 2008. Following these discussions the committee will publish a statement outlining what further work the government must do to ensure that all young people enjoy their rights. This statement is called the Concluding Observations.
Article 12 in Scotland are producing a series of podcasts to help raise awareness of the UNCRC, the government and NGO reports and the Concluding Observations.
Podcast 1 gives an overview of the UNCRC and how the UNCRC committee holds governments to account. Podcast 2 is a summary of our report I WITNESS THE UNCRC IN SCOTLAND.
Later on in the year we will release another two podcasts:
1. The Concluding Observations, a summary of what the UNCRC Committee thinks about the state of children and young people’s rights in the UK
2. Suggestions on how YOU can take action to ensure that the government does all it can to make rights a reality for all children and young people.
