The National Conversation

The Scottish Government has asked Young Scot to consult with young people to see what they think about Scotland and its future. This is part of the National Conversation, where the Government is asking everyone in Scotland what they think about the future of the country. There are lots of different views on how Scotland should be run in the future, but the important thing is that they all count.

How do things work at the moment?

The current Scottish Parliament began in 1999, to allow Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) to make more decisions about how Scotland is run. They can decide to do things differently from other countries in the UK. For example, the smoking ban came in to Scotland before it did in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. This is known as devolution. For more information have a look at Young Scot’s Have Your Say channel.

What about the future?

Some people are very happy with the way Scotland is run at the moment. Other people think it should be an independent country, in the same ways as neighbouring countries like Norway and Ireland, and others think it should stay the same, but that the Parliament should have more powers. This is why the Government have started the National Conversation, to let everyone in Scotland have a chance to decide what they think – including you!
