One Planet Picnic Competition

Scottish schools have been invited to take part in the ‘One Planet Picnic’, a project celebrating and enjoying Scottish foods taking place for 2 weeks from 12 – 23rd September.

One Planet Picnic is also a competition, where schools can battle to produce the best sustainable picnic and win top prizes. The winning picnic will be one that makes the most of local, seasonal and ethically sourced produce and is as waste free as possible. Top prizes include behind the scenes visits to an award-winning restaurant, an organic farm and a Scottish ice-cream factory. As well as cooking classes, demonstrations and goodies for your whole school.

What do I need to do?

Your school will need to design a recipe for your sustainable picnic and explain how the things you have used and the way it has been organised is sustainable. So get your thinking cap on. You might want to think about:

  • Where to have your picnic?
  • How to celebrate your picnic? Do you want music, a theme, entertainment?
  • Taste not Waste! Make sure your picnic is as waste free as possible, by thinking about how you transport and serve your picnic and how to minimise your food waste.
  • Ingredients should be locally, seasonally and as ethically sourced as possible. This could include veggies grown in your own or school garden, produced by local suppliers and food that grows naturally at this time of year in Scotland.

Is your school signed up to the One Planet Picnic?

Your school's entry for the One Planet Picnic will need to be in by 7th October. Find out more about One Planet Picnic and the competition on the Eco Schools website.
