Hi Marvin, thanks for taking the time to speak to us today!
No problem at all, thanks for having me!
We’ve got a project called Truth About Youth which aims to challenge the negative perceptions of young people in Glasgow. You’re young, do you think young people get a hard time in the press?
It’s a mixed thing isn’t it – youngsters causing trouble, but then I think there is press for young people doing good. So I think it’s a mixture of both really, like generally in society
Can you give any tips to an up and coming star what wants to make it in the music industry?
Well, you just need to work hard, I think you need to keep your eye on the ball really – whether it’s in music or sport, educational – whatever it is, just work as hard as you can really and know that if you put everything into something and it doesn’t work, then at least you have given it your all. But if you do give something your all – then as we have experienced – it’s very likely that it’s going to happen
What do you wish someone had told you when you were at school?
I think you know generally at school just to be working hard. When I was at school I was always into my music and my drama and stuff, but I also loved my academic side. It’s good to have a balance – don’t put all your eggs in the same basket. When you get older your likes and dislikes may change – I remember at school I disliked history, but now I’m fascinated by it. On the other hand, I used to love food technology – I don’t enjoy cooking anymore, you know, things always change and I think you should always try and keep a balance where possible
Who would you say is your role model?
My role models are first and foremost I think my parents. My Mum and Dad have been great role models to me. The fact that they are still together, they have been married over 25 years which is inspirational. Musically, I think Michael Jackson
You’ve got a new single which is out now. Can you tell us a bit about it?
Of course! The new single is called ‘She Makes Me Wanna’. It’s our first single which we’ve written with RedOne – I think everyone knows from his work with Lady GaGa – he’s amazing, and it’s great working with him and his team. The song features Dev who is doing so well right now, featuring on ‘Like a G6’ and lots of other records – she’s done incredibly well. We are really excited for it being released, we shot the video in Miami which is probably the best video we have shot so far
When is your next tour, and are you coming back to Scotland?
We are definitely coming back to Scotland! I’ve got Scottish roots – my Nan was born in Dundee, I’ve got family up there. For me it’s a fantastic place, Scotland. It’s one of the most favourite places we come to, Glasgow and Edinburgh and Aberdeen – all over Scotland really! We get a fantastic reception, and we are going to be touring again next year at some point
What do you think about your Scottish fans?
Scottish fans are absolutely incredible! They are the loudest fans without contest, they are amazing. We love girls with Scottish accents
Is there anything else that you guys are doing that you want to tell us about?
Just now, it’s all about the single, the album is coming out later in the year. Hopefully we will perform on The X Factor when it launches. It’s all about ‘She Makes Me Wanna’!
