International Walk to School Month

This October school pupils across the world are choosing to walk to school. Why don’t you give it a go too?

Why walk?

  • Walking is a great way to get fit and stay in shape. Walk quickly (as if you were late to meet someone) for 30 minutes each day will count towards your daily recommended amount of exercise.
  • You will have more energy. The more exercise you do, the more energy you have.
  • It helps you feel good. Walking for exercise helps reduce stress and worry. Being out doors can help you feel good too.

Getting started

If you're going to start walking then it's important to think about what shoes you wear. Wear a comfortable pair of flat shoes that give you support around your ankle. Shoes or trainers that you can lace up are best for this. Try to wear clothes that are lose and layer up your clothes so that you can take something off if you get too hot.

If you’ve not walked much before then start slowly and build up how much you do. You could try tackling smaller distances first. You could ask a friend to walk to school with you to keep it fun and keep you motivated.
