The eponymous debut album by “The Little Kicks” is sure to be the latest addition to any indie music fan's collection. Sounding similar to what Everything Everything might sound like if they focused more on guitars and the lead singer's voice wasn't scarily high, the band's debut album is relatively strong – and shows the potential for much more to come.
The vocals, although not ground-breaking, are gentle and pleasing, acting as a beautiful compliment to the rhythm of the guitars. In addition, the lyrics are very well written, managing to keep up a beautiful rhythm whilst still having some meaning – definite kudos is due to lyricist Steven Milne. Meanwhile, the beautiful melodies, with the keyboard excellently complimenting the guitar, are also extremely pleasing to hear.
My main issue with the album, however, is that there are no 'stand out' tracks, so to speak. There is no track that immediately grabs your attention, no track that makes you stop and say 'wow!' In fact, the tracks are all easily forgettable, to be entirely honest. Yes, the vocals are strong, and yes, the melodies are complimentary, but there just isn't that spark that makes one want to listen to any of the songs over and over again. If the songs were to be played on the radio, no one would turn it up when one came on.
The band do, however, show remarkable potential. Their attention to craft is brilliant, and if they keep up this level of commitment to their music, there is little doubt that they will produce a radio favourite very soon – it just won't be from this album.
