Within the first few notes of Benjamin Francis Leftwich's single 'Pictures', I was hungry for more. By half a minute through the song, however, I was wishing it was over.
The song is so repetitive, it is difficult to believe. Listening to the instrumental version of the track confirmed that the same melody is simply repeated throughout the entire song – choruses, verses, et al. Although this can sometimes be effective, during this particular track it begins to grate on one's ears – it's like when one is in school and hears a fire alarm. After the initial excitement, when one is bored and just wishing it was over, that's what the melody to 'Pictures' is like.
Then there are the vocals. Although Leftwich seems to have a genuinely brilliant, soft kind of murky voice, it sounds so doctored with echo effects that it really loses all originality. There was no need at all to place effects on the vocals, and all they serve to do is leave one with a worse impression of Leftwich as a vocalist.
Lastly, the lyrics of 'Pictures' are somewhat of a novelty. They are ludicrous, amusing, but ultimately they are nothing more than any novelty, quickly losing their appeal. It is a struggle to understand what on Earth was going through Leftwich's mind when he wrote “If you crash a car into your best friend's house, would you be quiet as words came out their mouths?” It's totally meaningless.
Ultimately, this track showed good potential, but was a great disappointment. The lyrics are nigh unbelievable, sounding contrite and absolutely meaningless, strings of words just stuck together so he had something to say to that maddeningly endless melody.
