IndianRedLopez's new single, Prometheus, is a quick follow up to their debut album released earlier this year. Although being marketed as a single, the CD actually has three tracks, reaching nearly 18 minutes in length, and is closer to an EP. Usually, a band giving out free tracks with a single is a welcome addition – unfortunately, with IndianRedLopez, it just prolonged the pain of listening to them.
IndianRedLopez attempt to combine a kind of 90s dance music with alternative rock, to create a unique sound. The sound is certainly unique, but in all the wrong ways. It feels as if the artists have sought to make tracks so conceptual that the songs lose all feeling of music, becoming more a cacophony of sounds. The tracks all just feel so fake, robotic, as if they have no emotion behind them. This creates an especial problem with the vocals, which feel doctored to the point that it is hard to tell if the vocalist can actually sing.
There is also a real problem with repetition, with all three of the tracks becoming tiresome and boring long before they finish. This is especially true for the last track, a seven minute remix of “An Iron Fist”, by Ryan Davidson. This track contains at least two full minutes of IndianRedLopez singing “c'mon”, which has been remixed to the point it can no longer be called singing. This example also serves to emphasise the meaningless of the lyrics of the tracks – which are more thrown in to fit the beat of a track, than to serve any real purpose.
What frustrated me most about this single was the fact that IndianRedLopez were very skilled in creating a great rhythm for each of their tracks, but they always overused it, and relied on it too much, making it almost feel like a rush-job. Disappointing, for a band that showed promise by combining a sound like Snow Patrol's with a sound like that of Ministry of Sound. However, in the end, it just didn't work.
