South Lanarkshire Youth Council
South Lanarkshire Youth Council consists of young volunteers between the ages of 12 and 25, who do not have any formal decision making powers but seek to influence those who do, such as Council Services, Police and Health Boards. The South Lanarkshire Youth Strategy and Corporate Connections Board (Community Planning Youth Partnership) are the main vehicles for doing this.
What do we do?
Youth Councillors represent the views of young people on a range of current youth issues including:
- Health and Wellbeing
- Youth Friendly Services
- Learning and Working
- Youth Rights and Responsibilities
- Included in Decision Making
We also represent South Lanarkshire young people at national events, conferences and major youth forums such as the Scottish Youth Parliament. Training and support for Youth Councillors is provided by South Lanarkshire Council (SLC) through the Youth Learning Service and its Universal Connections Youth Network. There is also a youth worker dedicated to supporting youth participation and decision making in South Lanarkshire.
We aim to:
- Work in partnership with South Lanarkshire Council to promote the voice of young people
- Work in partnership with other organisations such as local Colleges, Transport providers and Police to influence their youth policies
- Consult with a wide range of youth groups/organisations such as Social Inclusion Partnership/Regeneration Outcome Agreement
- Youth Forums, Pupil Councils, Uniformed Youth Groups, additional support needs Groups, Universal Connections and
- Youth Committees to obtain their views on youth issues.
- Improve the wider community perception of youth through the positive promotion of young people and their achievements.
Scottish Youth Parliament
The Scottish Youth Parliament is the voice for young people nationally. Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament (MSYPs) have been elected to represent South Lanarkshire at national meetings, developing and debating a youth agenda for Scotland.
