Homework. An element of school of which pupils despise and dread doing almost every night! For the younger years of high school, homework isn’t such a big thing; they get the odd piece of homework every now and again. But for older years, like fifth and sixth year, the most crucial years of high school, its goodbye social life, hello serious life.
“Personally I feel that we get too much homework as we are also expected to continually revise for all classes. Balancing homework with extra-curricular activities and personal training is difficult and it also restricts a social life which is important in teenage years. However, I agree that homework is necessary to get through a course,” explained a student of Jedburgh Grammar School who balances school, homework, revision, orienteering and her social life with great difficulty.
The question is how much homework is too much homework, even for seniors? Is there a point where pupils will start to rebel because of too much homework and because they’re fed up of doing the same thing every night instead of going out with their friends?
The answer to this is simple, yes.
There will be a point when students have had enough and will refuse to do homework as a fellow student explains, “When the school bell rings at the end of the day, that should be it, no more school work until the bell rings the next morning ” Should teachers give us no homework and fit everything into class time so no work at home has to be done? The most popular answer to this would be yes, however, the most beneficial answer would be no.
To teach us what we need to know requires our own contribution as well as the teachers which would take a substantial amount of time. So fitting more topics into class time would not be beneficial in the slightest and would not help a great deal in the long run when it comes to exams.
So ‘how much homework is too much homework?’ This all depends on how much you can handle or how much you can get done when you’re actually concentrating, everybody is different. Homework will only take a short time if you stick to it.
