What encouraged you to get involved with volunteering with organisations which provide support for young people with disabilities?
"An area which I have always been interested in mainly as I find helping other people extremely rewarding. I wanted to build upon my communication skills with other people and allow others to experience activities which they may not have been able to without extra support."
What sort of things do you have to do?
"I currently assist in a class at Fairview and help out at an Autistic Base. I take children with a range of disabilities on various outings, support adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder in a safe environment based around common interest activities and run a youth club for children with additional and complex needs."
Do you enjoy the time you spend there?
"Yes, I love it."
What do you think you gain from the experience?
"From my experience, I have developed my communication skills - learning basic Makaton (sign language) and using a variety of other methods such as symbols. I have also widened my knowledge and understanding of disabilities."
Has this changed your views on people with disabilities or have you always been an open-minded type of person?
"I feel that generally I am an open-minded person. However, I now have stronger views on many issues related to disabilities."
In your opinion, are there any qualities you feel are key to working with young people who have disabilities?
"I think the most important quality that is needed is patience. This is key, however it can be developed so don't feel put off if you don't believe this is not one of your strengths."
Would you recommend working with young people who have disabilities to others?
"I would recommend volunteering with an organisation which provides support for people with disabilities."
