Midlothian's Young Scots Flying the Flag for the Commonwealth Games

Cathy McKenzie, Karen Watson and Ryan Sturrock have stepped forward to be Commonwealth Games 2014 Youth Legacy Ambassadors for Midlothian. As Youth Legacy Ambassadors they will help ensure that the Games leave a lasting legacy of a more active, healthier and sustainable Scotland in their communities.

Cathy, Karen and Ryan are all members of the Midlothian Youth Platform, which brings together young people from across Midlothian with the support of Midlothian Council’s Community Learning and Development Team.

Councillor Peter Boyes, Midlothian Council Cabinet Member with responsibility for Communities, said: “I congratulate Cathy, Karen and Ryan on stepping up to the plate to support the Commonwealth Games as Youth Legacy Ambassadors. The eyes of the world will be on Scotland in 2014 when we host the Games. Here in Midlothian, we’ll be doing everything we can to ensure the Games are a great success and leave a lasting positive legacy in our local communities.”

Cathy, Karen and Ryan started their new role in June, and they’ve already been involved in supporting Midlothian’s Senior Citizen Olympics, held recently at Mayfield Leisure Centre. Ryan filmed the inaugural event and Cathy and Karen, along with fellow Midlothian Youth Platform members, volunteered to support participants and teams from around 12 care homes across Midlothian in a range of sports.

The Youth Legacy Ambassadors will have a big part to play in making sure everyone in Scotland gets the most out of hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games. They will be encouraged to work creatively and imaginatively to develop their own skills and knowledge. They will also work closely with other organisations to ensure young people have a voice and can influence how the games will benefit their communities.

In the run up to the Games, Midlothian’s new Youth Legacy Ambassadors will also get involved in creating online articles, podcasts, blogs and videos, attending events and helping to ensure the Games are a success and result in long-lasting benefits.
