To celebrate and encourage dance and gymnastics in children and young people in East Dunbartonshire, the Leisure and Culture Trust hosted GYMFEST for the first time at Bishopbriggs Leisuredrome on Wednesday, 26 October 2011.
GYMFEST has previously been held in Perth and is a popular celebration of gymnastics and dance within the community.
GYMFEST in East Dunbartonshire took place exactly a thousand days before the Commonwealth Games and was funded by EventScotland who generously provided a grant of just over £6000. This money enabled the Trust to provide ten weeks of gym and dance coaching to young people at all eight of East Dunbartonshire’s secondary schools in preparation for this spectacular event.
On the night they were joined by gymnasts from local gymnastics clubs and professional display team Glasgow Display Squad who performed ‘The Final Countdown’ to mark the approaching Commonwealth Games. They put on an outstanding display and have previously competed both nationally and internationally.
