If you are 16, 17 and 18 and have a Young Scot National Entitlement Card make sure you are saving on your rail travel by applying for the Scottish Youth Railcard.
What’s the Scottish Youth Railcard?
The Scottish Youth Railcard allows you to buy rail tickets for travel within Scotland at discounted prices. With the Scottish Youth Railcard you can get:
- One third off most rail fares.
- 50 % off all weekly or monthly tickets.
- One third off most advance purchases.
The Scottish Youth Railcard is valid only for 12 months, but you can reapply each year while you're 16, 17 and 18.
How can I get one?
If you already have a Young Scot card, then you should be sent a rail voucher when you turn 16. If you don’t have yours yet or you need a replacement then give your local Young Scot office a phone and they will be able to send you one. You will find details of the local Young Scot office in your area on the Get Your Card section, or give the Young Scot InfoLine a ring on 0808 801 0338.
If you do not already have a Young Scot card then you will need to apply for one before you can get the Scottish Youth Railcard. Contact the Young Scot InfoLine on 0808 801 0338 for details on how to apply. A rail voucher will be sent out to you at the same time as your Young Scot NEC card.
To get your SYR Card, take your voucher and your Young Scot National Entitlement Card to your local rail ticket office. The voucher will be taken from you and exchanged for a SYR Card. If your Scottish Youth Railcard is lost or stolen go to your local rail ticket office to obtain a replacement.
Using your Scottish Youth Railcard
When you travel you will need to take both your Young Scot NEC card and your Scottish Youth Railcard with you, or your discounted travel will not be valid.
Tickets should be bought in person from the Ticket Office to claim your rail discount, as the SYR is not always accepted by online ticket providers.
What restrictions apply?
There are certain restrictions on the 1/3rd off rail travel discount. There is a minimum spend if you want to travel before 10am on a weekday outwith July and August. At peak times you must spend £16 on standard day or open return or £8 on standard single tickets in order to qualify for the discount. There are no peak time restrictions on using the Scottish Youth Railcard to buy a season ticket.
