When Can I Leave Home?

Time to find out more about the legal side of things and what you can do if you want more help, advice and information.

The law and you

If you’re under 16 and decide to leave home, and are seen to be ‘at risk’, the law says that you could be returned home. If that’s not possible, the social work department becomes responsible for helping you.

If you are 16 and over in Scotland, you can leave home without the consent of your parents or guardians.

Family problems?

Having problems at home? If this is the reason behind you wanting to leave, think about what you can do to deal with the problems that make you feel like this. If you are not getting on with your parents, their partners or step-parents, or other relatives, there are people who can help you through the difficulties.

This is a fairly typical state of affairs in families, so don't despair - moving out in anger will not solve the problems and may create even more! Leaving home should only be a last resort when you've exhausted other possibilities.

It may be difficult but try to talk to someone you trust like a friend, relative, youth worker or teacher. They may be able to give you advice and information on how to improve your situation.
