Feeling restless? Cabin fever struck? If you want to visit friends and relatives, do a spot of shopping, or set out and explore the country, here are some tips to help you on your way.
Buying tickets
When you travel anywhere, whether it's by bus, air, train or sea, shop around and ask about special fares. You might get deals if you are buying:
- return fares
- a day, weekend, or a month away
- tickets for travelling at certain times of the day
- tickets in advance (well before you leave)
- standby tickets
- internet only fares, especially for flights and trains.
You may also get discounts based on your age (if you're under 16), and if you are travelling in a group.
Where to go
If you don't know what to see and do in Scotland then there's a few places to look:
Young Scot WOW - (What's on Where) is the place to find out all about sports, events, creative activities, courses and voluntary opportunities taking place throughout Scotland.
BBC - Things to do - Search for free and cheap things to do run by the BBC, museums, galleries and nature organisations.
The List - Find out about events and what's on throughout the UK.
The Skinny - If you live in the central belt pick up The Skinny magazine avaliable in local shops and bars, or look online. It has loads of info about gigs, events and offers.
VisitScotland - If you want to do something outdoorsy, or prefer to see what festivals are on the go, or even just what's going on in Scotland in general, go to the VisitScotland website.
Historic Scotland - Take a look to see where and what you and your family can visit in Scotland. There's castles, abbeys, lighthouses, and beautiful ruins which are worth a peek. Some are free and for others you can get a Young Scot discount.
