Dance Classes and Studying

If you fancy adding a bit of dance in to your life then take a look below!

Why dance?

Dancing makes you feel good. It's a fact. Even watching dancing makes you feel good - and perhaps even makes you want to dance. From ballroom to pop videos, Highland to hip-hop - there will be something to suit your music and taste. Here's just some of the styles you can learn:

African, Ballet, Ballroom, Hip-hop, Capoeira, Ceilidh, Ceroc, Disco, Flamenco, Hebridean, Tango, Highland, Jazz, Jive, Salsa, Scottish Country, Tap, Swing.

Classes

If you want to take your dancing further then you could learn from a private dance school or teacher.  Try searching Young Scot WOW for dance schools in your local area.

There are also a number of community dance centres, which are subsidised by Creative Scotland and your local council. They run a wide variety of pre-paid and drop-in dance classes for all ages and skill levels in all the above dance styles - and more! These classes are normally a fair price and often offer concessions for young people and/or Young Scot cardholders.

There are also Scottish dance centres in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee.

YDance

YDance is the National Youth Dance Agency for Scotland. They run workshops and summer schools in different parts of Scotland. You could maybe even ask your school or youth group to get in touch with them if you fancy getting them in to do a workshop. Phone 0141 552 7712 or visit the YDance website.

Studying

There are specific dance courses at colleges and universities across Scotland. You could try Telford College, Scottish School of Contemporary Dance, Anniesland College, Jewel & Esk College, Reid Kerr College, Moray College and the University of Highlands and Islands. Some Community Arts degrees also have some dance elements in them.

Remember, when choosing where you want to go and study dance, your best bet is to visit the college/Uni and see if you like the staff and facilities there. You could even ask a few students to see how they are finding the course.
