Methadone is a man made drug that is also known as Meth, Linctus, Mixture and Physeptone. It is prescribed by doctors to people who are trying to come off Heroin. Using or possessing Methadone without a prescription is illegal. It usually comes in a green, amber or blue liquid that is swallowed. It can also come in tablets or be injected.
Methadone is a sedative, this means it has a calming and soothing effect. It does this by slowing down how the body functions. Users have feelings of warmth, relaxation and feeling separated and distant from the present.
As a sedative, taking too much Methdone can put you in a coma. It can even cause death from respiratory failure (when you stop breathing). The risk of overdosing is increased if you mix Methadone with alcohol or other sedatives. Methadone can be addictive. Your body gets used to it so you need to take more to get the same effects.
Methadone on prescription
Methadone has similar effects to heroin so it is used as a treatment for heroin addiction. The dose of methadone is gradually reduced so it means that the withdrawal symptoms aren’t as severe.
