What is National School Sport Week?
National School Sports Week gives children and young people the opportunity to get involved in sport. It hopes to use the 2012 London Olympics to inspire all school pupils to try to play more sports. It will take place on the 11th – 15th June 2012 and there are lots of different ways that your school can take part.
Scottish Olympic Gold medal winning cyclist Chris Hoy helped launch the registration for the 2012 event.
The event is supported by the Active Schools network. It is their job to make sure young people in schools get involved in more sport and they help organise lots of sporting activities throughout your school.
There are lots of different sports and activities that can be part of National School Sport Week. You could:
• Hold opening or closing ceremonies.
• Compete against other schools in your area.
• Try some sports that will be part of the Olympics – especially if you’ve never played them before!
• Hold a Torch Relay or special one-off event!
• Speak to your Active Schools coordinator and come up with some ideas of what to do together
If you're struggling to think of ideas for some of the things you could do have a look at our School sports information.
More than sport
You can be part of National School Sport Week even if sport isn’t your strong point! If you’re good at maths you could help keep a record of the times, distances and points of the events or even work out some statistics! If art is your thing you could help design logos and banners or if you’re a writer you could write reports of how all of the action unfolded – there’s lots of ways to get involved.
How to sign up
1400 schools across Scotland took part in 2011 and if you want to make sure that you don’t miss out on the fun then check out the National School Sport Week website. It will have information on how you can get your school involved.
