Cash Cards, Debit Cards and Credit Cards

There are different types of cards you can get with your account. Some will come automatically with certain accounts, and some you have to ask for. There are some age restrictions on some types of card, so ask your bank, building society, or credit union what you are entitled to.

Cash card

A cash card is a plastic card that allows you to take your money out of a cash machine. Your cash card will also allow you to deposit money, check your balances and order statements. A cash card is often issued when you open a basic account.

The minimum age for a cash card is generally 16.

Debit card

A debit card is a plastic card, which allows you to pay for goods in a shop or online as long as there is money in your account. You can also ask for 'cashback' at some stores and supermarkets, which means when you buy something on your card, you can get some cash at the same time. You need to make sure you have enough money in your account or you could be charged.

A debit card called Solo or Electron works in the same way as Maestro and Visa Debit, and every transaction is checked to make sure you have enough money in your account. This means you can’t go over your limit. Some banks will provide under 18s with these, but for Maestro/Delta, you need to be over 18.

You can usually get a debit card with a current account.

Credit card

You will need to be over 18 to get a credit card. You will need to make a special application to get a credit card, as it is not something that comes automatically with an account.

If your application for a credit card is accepted you will be given a credit limit, which gives you access to a certain amount of credit (money) that you can use for purchases and cash advances.

A credit card is a way to pay for things, if you don't yet have the money to pay for them. It is useful for expensive purchases when you don't want to have a lot of cash on you. Credit cards have better insurance than debit cards and can safeguard against some purchases - i.e. cancellation of a holiday or faulty goods.

Under 18s may be able to use other peoples credit cards with their permission, e.g. your parent or partner.

Credit card companies issue statements on a monthly basis outlining how much you have borrowed, usually they request a minimum payment by a certain date. To avoid interest charges (between about 5 -18%) you should pay the full amount owed.
