Ten Steps To A Part Time Job

A selection of coins pic

Very few people are flush with their cash! Whether it's because you simply had to buy the latest Kate Moss fashion, the same football boots as Ronaldo, or you need to keep your mobile topped up, *blink* and your money's gone!

So here's a handful of top tips to help you earn a little bit of cash to keep you ticking over. This way you can get the latest CDs, DVDs, and fashion all by yourself.

Tip 1

Check out this site to find out all about the law on part-time work and how it applies to your age. You need to get the lowdown on how many hours you can legally work so you stay safe. Have a look at the Young Scot Law Channel for more info.

Tip 2

Write a C.V., which is basically a sheet about you and what you've done. Jot down if you have worked before, e.g. doing a paper-round. This shows all potential employers that you are reliable and responsible, which will work to your advantage. If you need more help on C.V. have a look at the Careers Scotland CV Builder website.

Remember to make sure you have loads of copies of your C.V. because you will be giving them out to lots of potential employers.

Tip 3

Draw up a list of possible businesses/shops and plan what you are going to do. You don't want a job that's too far away, as that's a hassle to get to. Decide whether you are going to call in at the shop/business in person, or simply phone them. If you call in don't bring a crowd of your mates too. Always look smart, clean and tidy.

Tip 4

Get prepared - know how much you can work and how much you want to be paid, within reason. You're hardly going to be paid £50 an hour! There's no point in speaking to the manager and then realising that you can't work Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays because you have homework, need to help out at youth club, or have other things on!

Tip 5

When you call into shops say you are interested in part-time work, and leave your C.V in case something comes up later. As your C.V has your contact details on it then they know how to get back in touch with you if a job comes up. Now you know why you need to remember to take copies of your C.V.

Tip 6

Keep trying and don't give up! It might take some time but you will find something in the end. The more you ask, the more word will get round that you are willing and determined.

Tip 7

When you do find a job, be prepared to have a go at anything, providing it's safe and legal. You never know, this may lead to promotion, which can often mean more money!

Tip 8

Think about putting a card in shops, supermarkets, or the Post Office saying that you're looking for work. Include your name and phone number. If someone calls and you arrange to meet up make sure you tell your parents/guardians where you are going and what time you'll be back. Meet in a safe place preferably at the business/shop in question.

Tip 9

For extra pocket money approach neighbours, friends, relatives and offer things like: lawnmowing; dog-walking and grooming; car/bike washing; DVD rental returns; pet sitting/feeding; leaf clearing; light shopping. Make a card saying which jobs you'll do and how much they cost. Be reasonably priced because if you charge too much no one will employ you. Remember to talk to your parents/guardian about this before you set up your empire.

Tip 10

Tell Young Scot about your successes and failures so that we can pass on your top tips to others! Drop us an email (see address in Helpful links on right) and we'll do our best to put your tips on the site.
