It is a smartcard that has been introduced by the Scottish Government in partnership with Councils across Scotland to provide easier access to services.

Who can get a card?

Anyone who is resident in Scotland and aged between 11 and 25 (inclusive) can get a card.  If you are aged between 16 and 18 years old (inclusive) you will also get additional travel concessions (see below).

How do I get a card in Renfrewshire?

To get a card in Renfrewshire you need to pop along to your local library and request an application form.  Staff will guide you through the process.  Once you have completed it and provided the required proff, they will validate it for you.

What do I need to apply?

You need to provide something to prove your age and also your address.  The same document cannot be used for both.  For example, to prove your age you can use a passport, birth certificate, driving licence, an official card with a PASS hologram on it.  For confirmation of address you can use a driving licence, utility bill, bank statement, tax bill, a letter from a school or university etc  Remember, you need to use two different documents to prove your age and address.  You will also need to supply a passport photo of yourself.  If you have supplied something with a photograph of you on it to prove either your age or address (eg passport or driving licence) then great - we can also use that to verify your photograph!  If the documents you used to prove your age and address don't have a photograph of you on it, you will need a referee to confirm the photo is of you.  Libraries staff will be able to advise you more.

What can I do with the card?

The card is pretty flexible and can have many applications.  In Renfrewshire you can currently use it as voluntary proof of age, to access fantastic Young Scot and special locally organised discounts and to gain rewards points.  If you are aged between 16 and 18 you can also get travel concessions.

What travel concessions can I get with it?

If aged between 16 and 18 you will get an additional travel card for bus concessions.  If you already have a card whilst under 16, your travel cardwill be sent to you automatically when you are eligible.  You can present your NEC card at train stations or onboard the train from stations where there is not ticket issuing facilities available and you will get your discount.  You are entitled to:

  • One third off most rail fares
  • 50% off all weekly and monthly rail tickets
  • One third off most advance rail purchases
  • One third off most adult single fares on almost all local and long distance buses
  • Scottish Islanders can also get two free return ferry journeys to the Mainland a year

I have applied for the NEC and I haven't yet received it or I have a question - what do I do?

You should contact Renfrewshire Council's Customer Contact Team on 0300 300 0300 (option 5 then 4) and they will be able to advise you on the status of your application.  Please note that delivery times can vary and usually take around 2-3 weeks.

My card and or vouchers have been lost, stolen or damaged - what do I do?

You should contact Renfrewshire Council's Customer Contact Center on 0300 300 0300 (option 5 then 4) to request a replacement.

I tried to use my card to prove my age but it was not accepted - who do I tell?

If your card was not accepted as valid proof of age, we need to know about it so we can do our best to let the retailer/vendor know more about the card and hopefully convince them to accept it.  Email active@renfrewshire.gov.uk and let us know where and when you tried to use it as proof of age.

What discounts are available with the card?

Information on discounts is available on this very website.  Just click 'Discounts' in the top bar and you will see what great things you are entitlement to with your card.

My address has changed or I want to update my photo - what do I do about that?

You should pop into your local library and bring sufficient proof of your new address.  If you want your photo to be updated bring along a new passport phot and also supporting proof eg your existing NEC, a passport or driver's licence.

If you need to know more you can pop into any local library in Renfrewshire or contact Renfrewshire Council's Customer Contact Centre on 0300 300 0300 (option 5, then 4).
